Knee Pain Relief

Knee pain can make stairs, squats, walking, and even getting up from a chair uncomfortable. We evaluate the knee and the entire movement chain (hip, ankle, and foot) to reduce irritation and restore confident movement.

Important Medical Note

Knee pain can have many causes, from overuse to injury. Conservative care is appropriate for many cases, but some situations require immediate medical evaluation.

Seek medical care for a sudden injury with popping, significant swelling, inability to bear weight, locking, visible deformity, fever/redness, or calf swelling/warmth.

Common Causes of Knee Pain

  • Overuse and training load changes
  • Patellofemoral pain (“runner’s knee”)
  • Tendon irritation (Tendinitis / Tendinosis)
  • Bursitis and local inflammation
  • Arthritic or degenerative changes
  • Movement imbalance from hip/ankle restrictions
  • Soft tissue restriction around the quad, IT band, calf, or hamstrings
Knee issues often involve the ankle and foot too — see Foot & Ankle Pain and Plantar Fasciitis.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain going up or down stairs
  • Pain with squats, lunges, or running
  • Stiffness after sitting (especially when standing up)
  • Swelling or a feeling of “fullness” in the knee
  • Clicking or grinding sensations
  • Discomfort around the kneecap or tendon area

How We Treat Knee Pain

Your plan depends on your activity level, movement patterns, and exam findings. Supportive care may include:

  • Fascial Distortion Model (FDM) for targeted fascial patterns
  • IASTM for adhesions and tissue restriction
  • Functional Dry Needling for trigger points (quad, calf, hamstrings, glutes)
  • Joint mobility support for the knee, hip, and ankle (when appropriate)
  • Movement guidance and strengthening strategies for long-term stability
Goal: reduce pain, restore range of motion, and improve stability so you can move with confidence again.

What to Expect at Your Visit

  • History of symptoms, training changes, and activity goals
  • Evaluation of knee mobility, strength, and movement mechanics
  • Assessment of hip and ankle contribution
  • Treatment tailored to your tissues and tolerance
  • Simple home plan (mobility + strengthening guidance)

Knee Pain FAQs

Why does my knee hurt on stairs?

Stairs increase load through the kneecap and surrounding tissues. This can highlight movement imbalance, tendon irritation, or patellofemoral stress patterns.

Should I stop exercising?

Not always. In many cases, modifying load and movement is more helpful than stopping completely. We can guide you on what to avoid and what to keep.

Do I need imaging?

Imaging may be considered if there was a traumatic injury, significant swelling, instability, locking, or lack of improvement with conservative care.

Can foot or ankle problems cause knee pain?

Yes. Limited ankle mobility or altered foot mechanics can change how force moves through the knee during walking, running, and squatting.
