McKenzie Method
The McKenzie Method is an evidence-based assessment and treatment approach that helps identify the source of pain and empowers patients with self-care strategies and exercises.
Book Now →What Is the McKenzie Method?
The McKenzie Method (also called Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy) focuses on how symptoms respond to repeated movements and positions. This helps determine what type of issue may be present — and which movements are most likely to reduce symptoms.
The goal is to identify a clear direction of movement that improves your symptoms and gives you tools to manage flare-ups independently.
Who Is the McKenzie Method Commonly Used For?
This approach is often used for spine-related pain patterns where symptoms change based on posture and motion, including:
- Low Back Pain
- Neck Pain
- Sciatica and radiating symptoms
- Pain that worsens with prolonged sitting
- Pain that improves or worsens predictably with certain movements
How the McKenzie Assessment Works
Rather than guessing, the McKenzie Method uses repeated movements to see what your symptoms do. During the assessment we look for patterns, such as:
- Centralization: symptoms move out of the arm/leg and closer to the spine (often a positive sign)
- Peripheralization: symptoms move further into the arm/leg (often indicates we should stop that direction)
- Changes in intensity, range of motion, and pain triggers
What to Expect During Treatment
Once we identify the movement direction that helps, your plan may include:
- Specific repeated-movement exercises tailored to your pattern
- Posture and ergonomics guidance (especially for desk/sitting pain)
- Strategies to manage flare-ups early
- Hands-on care when appropriate to support mobility
How McKenzie Fits With Other EverWell Services
Depending on your exam findings, McKenzie may be combined with:
- Cox Flexion Distraction for disc/low back patterns
- Chiropractic Adjustments to support joint mobility
- Functional Dry Needling for muscle guarding
- IASTM or FDM for soft tissue restriction
McKenzie Method FAQs
Is the McKenzie Method the same as physical therapy?
Not exactly. The McKenzie Method is a specific assessment and treatment system that many providers (including PTs and chiropractors) may use. It focuses on symptom response to repeated movement and self-care.
Do I have to do exercises at home?
McKenzie is designed to empower you with home strategies. Doing the recommended movements is usually key to the best results.
How quickly does it work?
Many people notice changes early when their symptoms match a McKenzie-responsive pattern. More complex or long-standing issues may take longer.
Do I need imaging first?
Not always. Imaging may be recommended if there are red flags, significant trauma, progressive neurological changes, or lack of improvement with conservative care.
When to Seek Medical Evaluation
Seek medical attention promptly if you experience:
- New or worsening weakness
- Loss of bowel or bladder control
- Severe symptoms after trauma
- Progressive numbness or coordination changes
